Hearth and Loft Interior

256
This interior (late 18th–early 19th cc.) shows a tall whitewashed hearth rising to a steep thatched roof, with a narrow wooden ladder giving access to a loft opening above. The hearth served for both heating and cooking, while the loft added storage or sleeping space within a compact plan. Thick plastered walls and the insulating thatch roof regulated temperature and smoke, demonstrating how early Cape Dutch settlers adapted European house forms to local climate.
